School of Perfume and Aroma Technology is the earliest established education center in China to systematically train the technical talents of flavor, fragrance and cosmetics. The School integrates the resources of Shanghai Research Institute of Fragrance and Flavor Industry (the only domestic scientific research institution engaged in fragrance and flavor directly under the former Ministry of Light Industry). The School is composed of three sub-schools, namely, School of Perfume and Aroma Technology, International School of Cosmetics and the Institute of Shanghai Oriental Beauty Vally. There are four departments, namely, Perfume and Aroma Technology and Engineering, Cosmetic Technology and Engineering, Food Science and Technology, and Bioengineering. They are also 4 undergraduate majors. Among them, the “Perfume and Aroma Technology and Engineering” and “Food Science and Technology” are selected in “National Ministry of Education Excellent Engineer Plan”; The major of Food Science and Technology has passed the China Engineering Education Professional Certification and the IFT Food Professional International Certification; “Perfume and Aroma Technology and Engineering” and “Cosmetic Technology and Engineering” are included in the “outside-the-directory Application-oriented Undergraduate”. the “Perfume and Aroma Technology and Engineering” and “Food Science and Technology” are selected in “The pilot program of Applied Undergraduate in Shanghai University”; The “Food Science and Technology” are included in “Shanghai secondary vocational education-applied undergraduate disciplines consistent training mode pilot”. The School has an academic doctoral program of “Chemical Engineering and Technology” with the characteristic and advantageous research direction of fragrance and flavor. It also contains Master's degree program in the first level discipline of Light Industry Technology and Engineering; Master degree programs in two secondary disciplines including “Perfume and Aroma Technology and Engineering” and “Biochemical Engineering”; Master's degree program in “Biology and Medicine”. Among them, “Perfume and Aroma Technology and Engineering” is the only master program in China to train the professional talents in fragrance, flavor and cosmetics.
The School adheres to the principle of cultivating virtue and nurturing talents. At present, there are 118 teachers. Besides, 16 of them are professors, 24 of them are associate professors, 74 of them have doctor degree, 45 doctoral and master's supervisors. The School has established a high-level teaching team consisting of Chief Scientist of the National Key Research and Development Program, National Candidate of the New Century Hundred Thousand Talents Project, Winner of the State Council Government Allowance, National Excellent Teachers, Model Worker of Shanghai, Shuguang Scholars of Shanghai, Pujiang Talents of Shanghai, etc. They promote the steady development of the School. There are 1782 full-time students in School, which includes 1315 undergraduate students, 460 graduate students and 7 doctoral students.
Among the employees of China's fragrance, flavor and cosmetics industry and enterprises, 80% of senior professional and technical talents were graduated from the School. More than 50% of China's fragrance, flavor and cosmetics industrialization technology comes from the School. The School has made important contributions to the talent cultivation and technology achievements industrialization of China's fragrance and flavor industry. Therefore, it enjoys the reputation of “Cradle of Chinese Flavors” and Industrialization Base of Scientific and Technological Achievements of Chinese Fragrance, Flavor and Cosmetics” among peers in China and abroad.
The School has the National Quality Supervision & Inspection Centre of Fragrance Flavor & Cosmetics, the Secretariat of the National Flavors Fragrances and Cosmetics Standardization Technical Committee, the National Urban Industrial Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, the National Fragrance Flavor and Cosmetics Vocational Skills Identification Station, the Provincial and Ministerial Collaborative Innovation Center of Fragrance Flavor and Cosmetics, the Engineering Center of the Fragrance Flavor and Cosmetics Education Ministry, the Shanghai Collaborative Innovation Center of Fragrance Flavor and Cosmetics, the Shanghai Fragrance and Flavor Engineering Technology Research Center, the Shanghai Research Center of Food Flavor and Quality Control Engineering Technology, the Shanghai Plateau Discipline – “Chemical Engineering and Technology (Fragrance and Flavor Technology and Engineering)”, the Class III peak discipline in Shanghai Chemical Engineering and Technology (Fragrance Science and Technology), and a number of national, provincial and ministerial platforms.
The School uses the characteristic advantages of flavor, fragrance and cosmetics, closely relates to the national development strategy, facing the beauty and health industry in Shanghai, and has made remarkable achievements in scientific research. It has successively presided over and undertaken more than 300 national, provincial and ministerial projects such as the “13th Five Year Plan” National Key Research and Development Plan Nanotechnology Key Projects (35.2 million yuan), the “12th Five Year Plan” Science and Technology Support Program of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the early stage of the “973” Program, and the National Natural Science Foundation, with a total scientific research fund of more than 100 million yuan. More than 500 academic papers have been published, including over 300 SCI indexed papers, and over 100 national invention patents have been authorized. The School has won multiple national and provincial-level teaching and research achievement awards, including one Second Prize of National Science and Technology Awards, one Shanghai Excellent Teaching Achievement Award Special Prize, two First Prizes of Shanghai Science and Technology Awards, one First Prize of China Light Industry Federation Science and Technology Invention, and one First Prize of China Food Science and Technology Society Science and Technology Awards. The overall level has reached domestic leading and international advanced.
The School focuses on strengthening students' professional ethics and strives to train high-quality talents in the core technical fields of socialist modernization. In the past three years, the employment rate of graduates has reached 100%. The top employers include Firmenich, Givaudan, IFF, Shanghai Bairun Investment Holding Group Co., Ltd, Huabao International Holdings Limited, Apple Flavor and Fragrance Group Co., Ltd, Chando Group Co., Ltd, Shanghai Jahwa United Co., Ltd., Bright Food (Group) Co., Ltd, and other well-known perfume, cosmetics, food, biotechnology enterprisesin China and abroad. The School have established internships and employment partnerships with more than 20 high-quality enterprises.
The School has carried out and established extensive talent cultivation, scientific research cooperation and academic exchanges with internationally renowned universities such as International Superior Institute of Perfume Cosmetics Aromas (ISIPCA), Clemson University, Rutgers University, Louisiana State University, The School of Industrial Biology (EBI) in France, etc. The school dispatch students to ISIPCA for international exchanges regularly. In addition, the School has established more than 10 joint research laboratories with well-known enterprises in China and abroad, such as the “French TechnicoFlor Joint Research Laboratory”, the “French Alpha MOS Flavor Fingerprint Analysis Joint Laboratory”, and the American TA Physical Property Test Joint Laboratory, which have effectively built academic exchange platforms in related fields for students.
